NSF/ANSI 58 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEMS

NSF/ANSI 58 is the American National Standard for point-of-use (POU) reverse osmosis (RO) systems, developed by a joint committee representing regulators, manufacturers, and end users. This standard outlines essential requirements for POU systems, including the safety of materials in contact with drinking water, structural integrity, TDS (total dissolved solids) reduction performance, efficiency and recovery ratings, contaminant reduction, and critical information for end users. These criteria ensure that RO systems provide safe, efficient, and reliable water purification for households.

TESTING UNDER NSF/ANSI 58

This standard requires different testing based on your specific RO unit or component. Testing is conducted as follows:

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT WHEN GETTING CERTIFIED TO NSF/ANSI 58

Testing is one element of becoming certified to NSF/ANSI 58. When you accept your quote and scope of work from NSF, you can expect the following steps:

CLAIMS AVAILABLE UNDER NSF/ANSI 58

Standard NSF/ANSI 58 includes testing procedures to verify a range of performance claims for reverse osmosis (RO) systems. Among the required criteria, TDS (total dissolved solids) reduction is mandatory.

Additional, optional performance claims can also be validated, covering reduction capabilities for cysts, hexavalent and trivalent chromium, arsenic, nitrate/nitrite, cadmium, lead, barium, turbidity, fluoride, copper, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), asbestos, perchlorate, radium 226/228, selenium, and pentavalent arsenic. These rigorous tests confirm that RO systems meet specific contaminant reduction standards, ensuring enhanced water quality and safety.

NSF/ANSI 372 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

NSF/ANSI 372: Drinking Water System Components – Lead Content is an American National Standard that establishes a standardized methodology for the determination and verification of product compliance to minimize lead contaminants. NSF/ANSI 372 is consistent with the United States Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and its lead-free plumbing requirements, as well as the requirements of individual U.S. states such as California. NSF/ANSI 372 serves as a basis to establish conformance with these regulations.

NSF/ANSI 372 addresses lead content only. Typically, regulations also require conformance to an extraction or leaching test standard. For most products, this means NSF/ANSI 61. For point-of-use and point-of-entry water treatment products, this means NSF/ANSI 42, 44, 53, 55, 58 or 62.

The NSF/ANSI 372 standard includes:

~ A maximum weighted lead content requirement of 0.25 percent (0.2 percent for solders and fluxes)
~ A formula for calculating the weighted average lead content of each product prior to testing
~ Specific procedures for testing products for lead content

PRODUCTS COVERED UNDER NSF/ANSI 372

Products that come into contact with drinking water undergo NSF/ANSI 372 testing to ensure safety and quality. This includes coatings, valves, pipes, gaskets, solder, and flux fittings, as well as faucets, water filters, water softeners, reverse osmosis systems, ultraviolet reactors, and water meters. These rigorous tests certify that each component meets the standards necessary for safe drinking water, providing peace of mind and quality assurance.
